About Swish Dental

Are dentures right for me?

If you're missing any of your teeth, this can affect your appearance as well as your oral health. Missing teeth can make it harder to chew, which can impact on your diet. If you still have some healthy teeth remaining, they may become crooked without support from neighbouring teeth, which can make them harder to brush and floss.

The dentists in Brisbane can discuss your suitability for dentures and other tooth replacement options during your consultation. Dentures are suitable for people of all ages, and can be a cheaper alternative to dental implants. We'll explain the pros and cons of all the treatments we offer so you can decide whether dentures are right for you.

What are the different types of dentures?

Dentures can replace as many teeth as you need them to. At our Brisbane denture clinic, we offer full dentures, partial dentures and implant-retained dentures.

Full dentures replace an entire row of teeth. Upper dentures rest on the roof of your mouth, while lower dentures are attached behind the teeth.

Partial dentures may replace a single tooth or several teeth in a row. These are attached to the neighbouring healthy teeth by hidden clasps.

Implant-retained dentures are full or partial dentures supported a dental implant, which gives them extra strength and stability.

If you're having full dentures, we may need to extract any teeth you still have remaining. We'll leave time for your gums to heal before beginning your denture treatment.

How are dentures made?

If you decide that dentures are right for you, you'll meet senior prosthetist Rod Litzow who'll guide you through the process and answer any questions you have. Getting your dentures in Brisbane is a 4-stage process:

1 icon

Impressions

We'll take impressions (moulds) of your mouth to create your custom trays. These trays can then be used to take more detailed impressions of your gums and any teeth you have remaining.

2 icon

Making your dentures

Our prosthetist will manufacture your custom dentures to a shade that matches your natural tooth colour, or a lighter shade if you prefer.

3 icon

Try in

When your dentures have been made, we'll arrange another appointment for you to try them out and see if they feel comfortable. We'll make any adjustments needed if you have any issues or feedback.

4 icon

Final fitting

When you're happy with your new dentures, we'll show you how to fit and remove them and give you advice about denture care. You can then resume your normal activities with your new smile.

How can I look after my dentures?

When you take good care of your dentures and your oral health, your dentures should last for 5 years or more. You should clean your dentures every day to remove bacteria, food and other debris from the surface. It's also important to continue brushing your teeth or gums, as oral health problems can affect how your dentures fit.

We may advise that you avoid some food and drink to prevent your dentures from being damaged or dislodged. If they do get damaged, contact our clinics for denture repairs in Brisbane. We'll also check the condition and fit of your dentures every time you visit us for your regular check-up.

What are the risks?

It can take a few days or a few weeks to get used to the feel of your new dentures, especially when it comes to eating. If you have any unexpected problems, make an appointment to talk to our dentists.

If you need any extractions before your dentures can be fitted, you may experience some pain, swelling or bleeding after a tooth is extracted. This should go away on its own or can be relieved with over-the-counter medication.
