At Swish Dental our goal is to minimise the risk of damage to your teeth by making custom mouthguards for our patients who play sports. On average we make around 2-4 a week for patients. Health funds normally cover a good proportion of the cost.

Preventing damage with mouthguards

Our team has a focus on preventing damage to your teeth and gums. Mouthguards are used to prevent physical injuries from sports damaging the teeth and gums which can lead to irreversible damage for life.

What is a mouthguard?

Mouthguards are are custom devices that sit on the top teeth to protect them from traumatic injuries that commonly happen when playing sports. We do not recommend the ready made mouthguards that are sold in shops as they do not fit well.

Who should have one?

Patients who have been assessed by us may be recommended one if they play sports where there is a lot of physical contact. Generally soccer is an exception but goalkeepers are advised to wear one.

How are mouthguards made?

An impression or mould of the top teeth are taken and sent to the dental laboratory. They will then make your custom mouthguard in the colour you want to fit tightly over the top teeth. Usually in a week it will be ready for us to fit it in for you.
